front entry makeover

Our nice new front door with sidelights (January 2006) brightened up the dingy hallway, but it still needed a lot of work.

Our front door had seen better days & we finally decided to replace it.

  • New front door with sidelights
  • New door with freshly painted walls
  • The old & dingy existing Armstrong floor is still in place.

First we had to deal with the old luan paneling that was covered with dingy wallpaper. The smart thing to do would be to rip off the paneling and replace it with drywall, but that's now how we do things around here. Instead, we chose to cover the imperfections. We put up some heavy-duty textured wall paper (meant to be painted) and gave it a nice fresh coat of paint. We added chair rail & crown molding.

The new floor installation started 3/14 and took about 4-5 days. New subflooring was put down first.

The opening that divides the front entry from the living room had very dark spindles. We left one for support and removed the rest of them. We covered the whole thing with various pieces of molding.

  • Original opening with dark brown spindles
  • View from the living room - original opening and ledge
  • Opening with all but 2 spindles removed, primer coat on the spindle we're keeping
  • Upper beam wrapped in new molding
  • Support spindle painted, upper beam & lower ledge wrapped in molding
  • Rebuilt living room ledge - the original is covered with oak boards and molding
  • New ledge wrapped in molding - view from the hall
  • Another view of the ledge
